Colleyville city officials have provided updates on the Cheek-Sparger Road reconstruction project, detailing funding efforts, design plans, and construction timelines. The project aims to enhance the roadway by updating it to a two-lane design, adding turn lanes at key intersections, and reconstructing and enhancing pedestrian trails.

Funding and Financial Contributions

The estimated construction cost for the project is $33.8 million. To date, Colleyville has secured $32 million from various sources, including $13 million from Tarrant County and $2.5 million through a grant program facilitated by Congresswoman Beth Van Duyne’s office in May 2024. The city is contributing $6.5 million of its own funds. Despite these efforts, there remains a $1.8 million shortfall. Assistant City Manager Mark Wood is in discussions with the Trinity River Authority to secure additional funding. Additionally, the North Central Texas Council of Governments is encouraging the city of Bedford to contribute 5% of the project cost, which would amount to $1.7 million.

Design and Construction Timeline

The city council has approved an $843,000 preliminary design contract with Kimley-Horn and Associates. This phase will include analyzing the potential installation of a traffic signal at the intersection of Martin Parkway and Cheek-Sparger Road. The outcome of this analysis will determine whether the intersection should be signalized. Furthermore, the Trinity River Authority plans to collaborate with the city to replace and upsize the water line from Bedford Road to Heritage Avenue, with preliminary design for this component scheduled to begin this spring.
Background
Efforts to secure funding for the Cheek-Sparger Road rehabilitation began in March 2021. In 2022, Colleyville officials received $13 million from Tarrant County, and in May 2024, an additional $2.5 million was granted through Congresswoman Van Duyne’s office. Initially, Bedford offered to contribute to the project but later withdrew, citing that a significant portion of the roadway lies within Colleyville. Bedford officials have indicated a willingness to fund 5% of the project, though no formal commitment has been made.
City officials continue to pursue additional funding sources to cover the remaining shortfall and move forward with the project aimed at improving transportation infrastructure and safety for residents.
