On May 3, 2025, Frisco residents voted against two key propositions aimed at funding a proposed performing arts center, signaling a significant shift in the city’s cultural development plans.
Proposition A, which sought to authorize the Economic Development Corporation to allocate sales and use tax revenues (excluding property taxes) for the construction of a city-owned performing arts facility, was rejected by approximately 59% of voters.
Proposition B proposed the issuance of up to $160 million in municipal bonds to finance the arts center. This measure faced even greater opposition, with about 64% of voters casting ballots against it.
The envisioned Frisco Center for the Arts was a substantial project, estimated to cost between $300 million and $340 million. Plans included a 2,800-seat main performance hall designed to host Broadway shows and major touring acts, as well as a smaller 300 to 400-seat community theater intended for local productions and school performances. The project also aimed to feature rehearsal spaces, visual arts areas, and support facilities.
Despite the setback, city officials and project partners had been actively exploring partnerships and funding avenues. In November 2024, the Frisco City Council ratified a letter of intent with Broadway Across America, outlining potential collaboration on the arts center. Additionally, discussions were underway with Prosper Independent School District to utilize the facility for educational and community purposes.
The rejection of these propositions indicates a need for city leaders to reassess and potentially reimagine the approach to enhancing Frisco’s cultural infrastructure. As the city continues to grow, the conversation around public investment in the arts and community spaces remains a pertinent topic for future consideration.
