Highland Village’s Unity Park is set to enhance its recreational offerings with a new basketball court, following the City Council’s approval on April 8. The project, estimated at $197,750, will be funded through 2022 bond funds and constructed by DHC Concrete Construction and Restoration.

Project Details:

  • Location: The court will be situated toward the back of Unity Park, positioned between the water tower and the parking lot, behind the baseball fields.
  • Dimensions and Features: The planned court will measure 62 feet by 106 feet, approximately 75% of a regulation basketball court. It will include a concrete foundation, a five-foot sidewalk connecting it to the parking lot, four basketball goals, and surfacing with lines and colors.
  • Construction Considerations: A significant portion of the budget is allocated for earthwork ($41,053) and concrete ($95,792). Following a soils report, engineers recommended incorporating steel grade beams throughout the concrete slab to ensure structural integrity and prevent issues such as sinking or cracking.

    Lighting Plans:

The current project budget does not cover lighting. Officials estimate that adding lighting would cost an additional $30,000, bringing the total project cost to approximately $230,000. The city plans to address the lighting component in a future meeting after obtaining bids. If the lighting expenses exceed the budget, the court may initially be constructed without lighting fixtures.

This development underscores Highland Village’s commitment to enhancing community amenities and providing residents with improved recreational facilities.
