In a significant move to bolster regional air travel infrastructure, the McKinney City Council has approved over $61 million in funding and contracts for the expansion of McKinney National Airport. This decision, made during the May 6 council meeting, sets the stage for the construction of a new 46,600-square-foot passenger terminal on the airport’s east side.

Project Overview

The expansion project includes:

  • A 46,600-square-foot passenger terminal with three gates, expandable to five.
  • A 980-space parking lot adjacent to the terminal.
  • A new taxiway, Taxiway C, on the east side of the existing runway.
  • A roundabout off FM 546 providing access to the terminal.

Construction is slated to begin in May, with commercial airline service expected to commence in late 2026.

Funding Breakdown

The project’s $61.36 million budget will be sourced from various entities:

  • $30 million from the McKinney Community Development Corporation bond.
  • $15 million from the McKinney Economic Development Corporation bond.
  • $5 million from the McKinney Utility Construction fund.
  • $8 million from the Tax Increment Reinvestment Zone #2 fund balance.
  • Approximately $3.36 million from the city’s Airport Construction Fund balance and Airport Operating Fund balance.

Council Actions

During the meeting, the council approved several key items:

  • An ordinance amending the FY 2024-25 budget and the 2025-2029 Capital Improvements Program to allocate funds for the expansion.
  • A resolution authorizing a guaranteed maximum price contract with Swinerton Builders for construction management services.
  • A resolution approving an amendment to the contract with Garver for architecture and engineering services.

Looking Ahead

The new terminal is expected to enhance McKinney’s position in the regional air travel market, offering increased convenience for residents and supporting economic growth. With construction set to begin imminently, the city anticipates welcoming commercial airline service by late 2026.
