Texans have an opportunity to stock up on essential emergency preparedness supplies without paying state and local sales taxes during the upcoming tax-free weekend, scheduled from Friday, April 26, through Sunday, April 28. This initiative, established by the Texas Legislature in 2015, aims to encourage residents to equip themselves for potential disasters such as hurricanes, floods, wildfires, and tornadoes.
According to a news release from the Texas Comptroller of Public Accounts, the tax exemption applies to a range of emergency-related items:
There is no limit on the number of qualifying items that can be purchased. The tax holiday begins at 12:01 a.m. on April 26 and ends at midnight on April 28.
Comptroller Glenn Hegar emphasized the importance of preparedness, stating, “While we can’t know in advance when the next fire, flood, tornado, or hurricane may occur, we can make sure our families, homes, and businesses have the supplies they need to face these and other emergencies.”
For online purchases, delivery, shipping, handling, and transportation charges are included in the sales price and are subject to the same tax exemptions.
The Comptroller’s office estimates that Texans will save approximately $2.3 million in state and local sales taxes during this tax holiday.
