On Saturday, April 19, 2025, thousands of demonstrators gathered across the Dallas-Fort Worth area as part of the nationwide 50501 movement, protesting against the Trump administration’s policies and perceived threats to democratic institutions.

The 50501 movement, named for its goal of organizing protests in all 50 states on one day, has been active since February, advocating against what it describes as “anti-democratic and illegal actions” by President Donald Trump’s administration. Protesters cite concerns over executive orders affecting immigration, reductions in government oversight, and actions they believe undermine civil liberties and the rule of law.

In McKinney, approximately 700 people assembled at the intersection of U.S. Highway 380 and U.S. Highway 75, holding signs and chanting slogans. Jeremy Sutka, chair of the Collin County Democratic Party, noted an increase in political activism in the area, attributing it to growing concerns over federal governance.

Participants included first-time protesters like Sharon Guynes of Plano, who expressed her desire to make her voice heard amid concerns about due process in the federal government. Dr. Ashleigh Payne, a pediatric cardiologist from Dallas, joined the protest due to apprehensions about the administration’s impact on science and healthcare.

The April 19 demonstrations followed the “Hands Off!” rallies on April 5, which reportedly took place in over 1,200 locations nationwide, including significant gatherings in Dallas, Austin, Houston, San Antonio, and El Paso. Organizers aim to sustain momentum through continued civic engagement and community organizing.

While the protests were largely peaceful, with minimal counter-demonstrations, the 50501 movement continues to mobilize citizens concerned about the direction of federal policies and their implications for democracy.
